 Candy Stripe Reed (Phragmites austalis)

Candy stripe reed grows in sun to partial shade from 2’-3' tall resembling a variegated dwarf bamboo. It thrives in dense colonies along pond edges and bogs. Water depth to 6". Hardy to zone 3. Full sun to part shade.

Each leaf is different – an exotic combination of vivid colors. New foliage emerges in rich burgundy tones – which quickly develop flamboyant stripes of red, pink, yellow and deep green fanning out from the vivid green central vein. Low mounds of four lobed leaves with copper highlights.  Unlike the floating variety the stems of this plant can grow vertically up to 10 in. raising out of the water.  Also a good transitional plant at pond's edge and is good protective shading for the fish. Grows in sun to part shade. Water clover is the lucky charm of the pond. Easy to grow, attractive foliage floats on the water's surface. The leaves open in the morning and close at night. Full sun to shade. Likes water up to 6 inches. Hardy to zone 5.
