Calculating Pond Volume

One of the most important things to know is your pond's volume (gallons) because it determines the proper pond equipment and water treatments. Length, width and depth are crucial to determining the volume. Because there are many different shapes and depths of ponds, it is sometimes easier to calculate volume by dividing the pond into sections and calculating each section. Add the total of each section together for the final volume. Below are basic pond shapes and formulas to calculate your pond's volume.

Area = (L x W) (R x R x 3.14)
Volume = area x average depth x 7.48

Area = R x R x 3.14
Volume = area x average depth x 7.48

Area = (A x B) x L x 0.45 (approx.)
Volume = area x average depth x 7.48

Area = A x B x 3.14
Volume = area x average depth x 7.48

Area = L x W
Volume = area x average depth x 7.48

L = Length W = Width D = Depth R = Radius
